Head Coach | Matthew “Mac” Zara
Mac began his rugby journey at the University of North Carolina in 2015, as a scrum-half before transitioning to fly-half. In, 2018-2019, Mac took on the roles of team captain and president. During university, Mac also served as a student manager for the UNC Women’s Soccer team.
Returning to his alma mater in 2020, as an assistant coach heading up the backs and offense, he found his true passion within the sport, coaching. Fall 2023, marked his first season serving as head coach for UNC Women’s Rugby. He has also coached both the Carolina Geographical Union & SARC’s U23 XVs Selects teams. Mac has also served as manager for the USA South U23 Reapers for the 2024 and 2025 championships. Administratively, he also serves as the D1 Commissioner of SARC (South Atlantic Rugby Conference) under NCR (National Collegiate Rugby).
Mac was also awarded the US Women’s Rugby Federation’s 15 Under 30 award in 2024.
